I Will be a Better, Faster, Stronger Triathlete!

Now that I've gotten the triathlon training basics down, this year I've decided to focus on increasing my skills.

Ok, maybe not yet, but that's the plan.

This year, I'm not going to just swim for distance; I'm going to swim better! I'm going to do drills!

Ones that involve kicking!

Digging!

Bilateral breathing!

Trust me.  It's how the cool kids are doing it these days.

And pushing down the window panes!

It's a thing.  TriGuy learned about it on the interwebs.

As for running, I'm not just going to be in it for distance either.  I'm going to do speed work!

And tempo runs!

And hill repeats!

It's a word, I swear!  It might mean one of the other things I already said, though.

And, I'm not just going to bike for distance.  That's right. I'm going to get some fancy shoes!

And some clipless ped.....ahhh. Ahahahahaha! Aha!  Ha.  Nope.  I'll just continue to focus on not falling off the bike again this season.

So, what are your goals for this year?
Are you building speed?  Or distance?
Are you starting something exciting and new (on or off the Love Boat)??  <---Hmm, showing my age a little there.

NEXT POST:  A SURPRISE TOPIC (POSSIBLY MORE YOGA)

4/10/12 EDIT:  I am linking up with Yeah Write for the very first time.  Go on over and check it out!

  1. Wish I could go for speed, but now that I just found out I am pregnant, it looks like I will be taking it easy for the next year. booooo.

  3. Haha!Your picture to represent a tempo run is SPOT ON!

  4. Im working on something new which isn't really new but it is new to me again since I haven't done it in 20+ yrs and working on speed for running

  5. hooray, you are going to be so hardcore this year and I can't wait to see it happen. You're making a comeback in a big way! Love your "meep meep" picture, you little road runner. I'm going for distance AND speed this year. Here's to hoping 2012 is an epic year for both of us..sans injury

  6. haha good luck training! those pictures made me laugh

  7. Hahahah I love how determined all your little drawings are! I'm sure you can master the bike too..

  8. So much perplexed me this time and I'm way too lazy to use the internet I'm already on to search for answers. Fartleks? Sounds like a disturbing fetish. Window panes? That can't be real? That's some Mr. Miyagi Karate Kid type stuff.
All the best in your efforts to improve.

  9. LOVE! You crack me up!

I will be attempting to increase distance this year with my Ironman training - I have no idea what I've gotten myself in to with 100+ mile bike training rides, 20+ mile training runs, 3 mile swims...oy! But it's all for my big goal and I hope I make it!
Cheers to 2012 - can't wait to get out there and run with you!

  10. working on my speed and maybe how to ride a bike. I did it as a kid...a lot...but I think the old adage is total horsecrap.

  11. Love the getting creative with the stick people. One thing I love about Fitfluential is all the encouragement we can give and take from one another. Consider yourself encouraged! :)

  12. Love the Mee-Meep picture :) Probably because my goal for the year is working on my running, specifically speed and distance :)
    Good lock with your goals!

    ReplyDelete
  13. I'm just going to run again. That will be enough for me! If I get faster or stronger or better, then that's cool, too!

Now I'm going to go google the whole window panes thing...

    ReplyDelete
  14. What? What is the "fart" thing about?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Great post! I'm also using this year to build speed and power. I have 2 70.3's on the calendar this summer - yikes! Best of luck with your training!

  16. Love it! This year I'm focusing on being stronger and letting some hip and shoulder injuries heal before jumping back into full training. I'm hoping to do another tri this summer, but right now I want my body to heal more than anything!

  17. Haha. Your drawings are the best!

  18. A Party and HALF: Well, congrats girlie! You will be running again, probably pushing that baby jogger!

MizFit: Thank you very much...I will be grateful for the support!

    Tina: Hehe, you know it!

Tara: Yes! We can work on speed together (virtually)! And good luck on that other thing :)

MegO: Yeah!! You are killing it already! So exciting!

    Lora: Thanks :D

    Lindsay: Thank you!

Gia: Never say never...though it has been several years :P

Pickleope: Sorry, man. I suppose I should have provided links to all those terms...just crazy training things. As always, I appreciate your support!

Erika: I can't even fathom Ironman training! Of course it will be worth it! So excited for you to move out here :D

Cat: Yes, it definitely is! But I relearned so you can too!

Ericka: Yeah! Go FitFluential encouragement! Thanks :)

Kristin: Yes! It is a popular goal this year, huh?

Megan: So excited for you to start running again! Pushing down window panes is awesome!

Allie: Something about sprinting in the middle of your run, I think??

Emily P: Wowza! That's an amazing summer you have planned! Good luck to you too!

jessica: What a great plan! Isn't it soooo hard to be patient enough to heal properly?

    viane: Thanks so much!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Wow - those drawings are amazing! How do you do that???

    ReplyDelete
  20. Emily: Thanks! I will try to stay accountable on the goals!

  21. LOL I love the "cool down" part of the tempo run pic. Seems pretty accurate to me!!

  22. Your enthusiasm is LEAPING out of this post!! Loving it! Great plans! The pic of you doing "speed work" is still making me giggle!!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Mrs. Q: Glad I'm not alone :)

Jennie: Leapin' lizards! I'll do my best to follow through!

    ReplyDelete
  24. This is the best post ever !! I love it. What the heck is bilateral breathing??!!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Bilateral breathing looks . . . impossible? Good luck with gaining all of those mad skills! I admire your enthusiasm for not one, not two, but three sports. Impressive!!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I agree with Ada, your enthusiasm is impressive and so is your energy. Thanks for stopping by my blog.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Ricole: What? My picture didn't explain it?? Just kidding :) It's when you alternate which side you breath on when doing front crawl. You turn your head to the right and breathe in, then breathe out, take 2 strokes, then breathe in on the left.

Ada: Thanks! Yeah, that way would be pretty tricky.

Paula: Thank you! Glad you came by as well :)

  28. Great plans! My own goal is to use our new gym equipment at home and eat better. I'm much better at taking care of others than taking care of myself. Need to change that.

  29. Your drawings are hilarious!! Thank you for your funny comment on my blog.

Okay so I am only posting this because I think you might want to do it - but I have a link-up every week for the next 10 weeks for anyone trying to get in shape - physically, mentally, emotionally, or professionally. It's a contest with a prize and whatnot, but at the very least you get to linkup and attract even more readers to your blog :) You are very welcome to do it.

    Weekly linkups are Thurs-Sun http://the-pish-posh.blogspot.com/2012/03/week-1-get-fit-challenge.html

  30. Um, I will try to dance more often so I won't get rooted to my chair? Some indecent activities also come to mind. :D

    ReplyDelete
  31. Susi: Oh yes, that's a common thing we do, isn't it? Sounds like you have a good plan!

Pish Posh: Thanks! I will definitely check that out. Sounds like my kind of hop :D

    Tanya: PERFECT!!

  32. love it! I'm excited for you! I feel great about speedwork. I was just reading that interval training is the best form of speed work for distance athletes and I LOVE it. tempos are nice too. Farklets or whatever is apparently just a fancy term for when you go on a run and mix it up with speedwork, sprints, slower pace recoveries, hills and such. Or so I understand. I think it's just a cool term someone made up for a "Creative run" lol

I love this post!!!! filled with such happiness

  33. I've been super crappy with the commenting lately but I did vote. You're up to 13!

VV: Oh, nice! Thanks! Hope you're doing ok!

Chibi: Thank you! Love your profile pic :) Did you draw it? It is so cute.

alex: Hehe. I suppose that would do the trick!

  51. I love the red suit! Too funny. I watch my brother-in-law prepare for his triathlons, so I get this. My goal would be to balance a handstand in the middle of the room. Yes, I'm a yoga fanatic. Love your drawings..

  52. I had to laugh - "what are you goals? increased speed?" honestly - I don't think I've moved my body in 9 years. (-:
PS: Your drawings were fab. I'm waiting around for them to inspire me because they are inspirational.

  53. Love your post! Your creativity is wonderful. Love love!

  54. jamieywrites: Thanks for all of that!

christina: So do I, dear. I just leave them out :) (artistic license and all)

Treading Water in the Kiddie Pool: Thanks! What I lack in talent I attempt to make up for in enthusiasm :)

Julia: Thank you! It's hard to get motivated to start, and to keep going when you hit a bump.

Stephanie B: Oh yoga! I've been doing more lately. But a handstand?? I'll never do it; I'm too terrified :)

Ado: Oh! Come back and tell if you did something!

    Angela: Thanks so much :)

  55. I just LOVE your drawings!

And the word fartlek. It makes my inner 10 year old giggle.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Alison: Thanks, Mama. It is quite the giggle-inducing word :)

    ReplyDelete
  57. Love this, it even made me want to walk away from the Easter candy bowl ;)

    ReplyDelete
  58. these pix are both hilarious and oddly inspiring! i have to figure out the exercise part of my life. maybe i'll draw some pix of me sweating my butt off. does that count?

    ReplyDelete
  59. Monkey Mama: It is the thought that counts, right? Even thinking requires burning energy :D

Christine: It definitely counts--especially if you draw yourself doing something you enjoy.

More Than Mommies: Thanks so much!

    ReplyDelete
  60. I love your swimming drawings! Welcome to yeah write!

    ReplyDelete
  61. you ROCK! Love the pics and love the training. I don't do tris as swim is a four letter word. So I do dus.

    thanks for the awesome humor!!

    ReplyDelete
  62. I love the way the shirt was drawn over the stick! Cute post!

    ReplyDelete
  63. LOL...I fall off the bike, too :P

My exciting and new thing is...indoor rock climbing! woo hoo...scares the crap outta me and excites me at the same time :)

    ReplyDelete
  64. Shiftless Mommie: Thanks! I think I like Yeah Write!

Missy Olive: Why thank you :) Yeah, I do tris where it's cold so I can wear a wetsuit. That way I don't have to worry about things like drowning and hypothermia (learned that lesson the hard way...obviously I did not drown)

Michelle: Thanks! It's the TriGirl uniform :)

Youngman: So glad I could add to your list!

XLMIC: Yes, but I bet you have fancy clipless pedals :D Oh, rock climbing. Scares the crap outta me too, but it does not excite me. I bet you will be awesome at it! I was gonna say 'rock' at it, but that would be lame.
