To be clear, I did not have wine on my way to yoga; it was the night before. But more on that in a moment. In order to finish the title of this post, I needed to go back to my Twitter feed. When I wrote my last yoga post, I took to the Twitterverse for a title idea, saying nothing rhymes with yoga.
See? I then decided on a title, but shortly thereafter got a series of responses:
Oh, right.
Sooo, Wine Before Yoga, You Might Want a Toga!
Or, maybe not.
You see, one sunny Saturday afternoon not so long ago, TriGuy and I were spending a lovely day together. We had a little glass of wine. We went out that night and had some apps and a bottle of wine. The waitress came by and refilled our glasses. That made 3 glasses of wine for me in one day.
This did not help with balancing.
The next day I went to power yoga. It was good! Surprisingly so. But there was more balancing. My sorry little glutes did not want to do the work required. I used the block.
It did not help. You know what else didn't help? The teacher saying "I find the block sometimes makes balancing even harder."
And, you know what makes it even worse? Laughing at how ridiculous you feel but trying to stay quiet so as not to disrupt the class.
Yoga is one of those things that you are always supposed to be working on, so I will continue to learn. And I have oh-so-many confusing moments to discuss about yoga, such as how to measure distance on my mat.
But we'll save that discussion for another time.

Is it the wine's fault? I blame the block. Can't be the booze's fault. If we start blaming booze for everything, pretty soon we won't be able to drink and drive. (Please don't be angry, I'm making a donation to MADD right now.)
ReplyDeleteI tried to think of something other than "toga" but the closest I got was "bodega".
That damn block never helps me either. But perhaps a toga would...
ReplyDeleteHhah thanks for the shoutout. Drunk yoga sounds hilarious.
ReplyDeleteI like drinking wine. Yoga...not as fun!
ReplyDeleteYour blog made me laugh!
I liked the pictures. They are awesome.
Oh god regular yoga is hard enough. Your drunk yoga probably equals my regular yoga.
ReplyDeletehahaha oh i wish you wore a toga! I don't think my body could handle yoga after 3 glasses of wine. Scratch that, i KNOW my body couldn't handle it. You deserve a round of applause for surviving.
ReplyDeleteI think I'd rather have the wine than the yoga. LOL!
ReplyDeleteFun post!
Pickleope: We can blame the block :) If we stopped drinking then some of us might think that bodega and toga don't rhyme!
ReplyDeleteDr. Cynicism: you know, you might be right. Maybe. Because the block didn't do me any favours.
Gia: It was more slightly hungover yoga. I can't enev imagine drunk yoga!
Carrie: Thanks! Drinking wine does tend to be more fun than yoga :P
Pish Posh: I would bet that our yoga skills are equal-sober, drunk or hungover.
MegO: Uhhh, yeah that would be something. No applause needed for hungover yoga...
Mandy: I'm with ya :)
Oh man! Rough. This reminds me of the time I promised Erik I'd go running. Drank wine instead. He reminded of said promise. I went running. BAD idea.
ReplyDeleteBAHAHAHAHA! I have done yoga with the Wine Flu before and it was not pretty. I told the woman next to me my hip flexors were tight - she winked at me like she as having the wine flu too :)
ReplyDeleteTotally the block...or maybe a slippery mat (I've had those before too). And I think Toga Yoga may just be the next big rage - I'm all in!
ReplyDeleteVV: Oh that would be awful. The only activity that goes with drinking wine is sitting on the couch.
ReplyDeleteMeghan: Wine flu-that's a good one!
Erika: it *was*the block! Toga yoga definitely has a nice ring to it, but the logistics seem like a nightmare!
Loved this post. You know, that part about judging distance reminds me of the problems I have with how far to turn the knob-thingy in Spinning. I never seem to get it right and by the time I get my resistance all fixed up, they've moved on to something else. Oh wait, we weren't talking about my Spinning problems, we're we??? Oh, and how about Calistoga?
ReplyDeleteAdele: I never get the knobby thing right.
ReplyDeleteI don't know about drinking and yoga--those funky digestion twisty poses could induce more flatulence than usual:( Funny!!!
ReplyDeleteHaaaaaa!!!!! I love it. It would be even harder to balance of you were wearing a toga!
ReplyDeleteYeah... There's a reason why I don't do yoga. I'm too conscious of how I look and I don't want to look ridiculous in front of others.
ReplyDeleteGood point - how do people ever really know what 3 1/2 feet on the mat is? Doubly hard when you are feeling a little ... wobbly!
ReplyDeleteI love the sketches that is how I would imagine myself looking if I did yoga except add a lot of weight to the cartoon person.
ReplyDeleteYou should have worn the toga AT yoga, that way you could have disguise the fact you had two feet on the ground. Adorable post. Ellen
ReplyDeleteA toga to yoga could be quite revealing. Even with the block.
ReplyDeleteI can't do yoga in front of other people. I have to do it in the privacy of my own home because I look like an anaconda that has swallowed a rhinoceros and is attempted to regurgitate the bones.
I've come to realize that yoga is not my thing. I feel gangly and uncoordinated everytime I try. I did a prenatal yoga class when I was pregnant and it ended badly. I got stuck on my back somehow and flailed around like an upside down turtle. It was not pretty.
ReplyDeleteMan, I suck at yoga even when I haven't had a drink for months! Love your drawings! They crack me up!
ReplyDeleteNever tried yoga, but if I did I'd need a mat with a grid on it.
ReplyDeleteOh man...no mater how.many yoga classes I take I always still feel like a newbie!
ReplyDeleteWine, togas, and fitness...how could you go wrong? Sounds like you lead a very "balanced" life to me :) HA!
ReplyDeleteHA! Hungover yoga sounds like fun more fun than sober yoga.
ReplyDeleteI'm very bad with measurements, I wouldn't know how long a yard is or how many millimeters are in 5 centimeters if my life depended on it.
However, I sorta know how to tell how long 6 inches is... it's as long as a 6 inch Subway sub! I'm resourceful like that. (I say resourceful, you say stupid... whatever, it's all the same!).
Funny post!
I like the idea of yoga - I find the calming aspect of it annoying though. Hungover sounds even worse!
ReplyDeletethis is doing nothing for my already rampant yoga performance anxiety!
ReplyDeleteJennifer: Is that the purpose of the twisting poses??
ReplyDeleteRicole: Yes, I believe you're right :)
DWei: I try to get there early so I can be at the back. The worst is when I have to be in the middle.
Kim: I honestly have no clue!
Vivian: Thanks :) It's interesting how hard it is for so many of us.
Ellen: Ohhh, good idea!
MamaMash: Yes it could. And, that was the best visual ever!
Delilah: Well that wouldn't be fun. It's not my thing either but if I don't go I will not be able to move.
Treading Water: Thanks! (Don't tell anyone, but I'm not good at it when I haven't had wine either.)
Vanessa: GENIUS!
lifeafterswimming: As do I. Why is that??
Katie: Hehehe :)
Karine: I say resourceful. It has meaning to you!
Michelle: Probably not the best way to be 'present'. And somehow, I have a hard time saying no to a glass of wine on a Saturday night.
Anna: Oh no! Get there early and find a spot in the back of the class :D
I'm too clumsy for yoga, wine or no wine, but when I used to try I was definitely a back-of-the-class kind of girl. Your drawings took me right back to my days of attempting balance!
ReplyDeleteObviously, I love the yoga-toga rhyme...and what about Yoda who'd do yoga in a toga? Too much? Haha!! I hate those blocks. Okay, hate is a strong word but I agree that it just complicates things and, frankly, I don't need the added challenge. Ha!
ReplyDeleteThe drawings are so cute! I can't relate to any desire to do yoga. That's long gone for me. But I do enjoy your telling of it!
ReplyDeleteugh, yoga instructors: "that's why we call it a practice" and then they go do some stupid standing head to knee or rooster pose like it's a walk in the park. these days my block has become more coaster and children's toy than anything else!
ReplyDeleteLouise: Yeah balancing is just hard. I don't know why I think wine helps out.
ReplyDeletejennie: I might trip just while trying to concentrate on saying that! I have discovered the black block is more stable than the purple block :)
Kristin: Thanks!
Susan: Yes. I have had instructors who do that too! I think you found the perfect use for that block!
I believe drinking is the exact opposite of yoga. Interesting hybrid.
ReplyDeleteI think drinking may improve my yoga, because it is so terrible I will try anything, and drinking is an easy thing to try with it :) (versus practice, of course)
ReplyDeleteYoga is hard enough, wine might just make it fun :)
ReplyDeleteDude: Power yoga and wine definitely do not mix, but I'm thinking there may be a market for wine and something like restorative yoga, where there's a lot of resting :)
ReplyDeleteLaurel: It certainly can't hurt, right? But, don't quote me on that!
jessica: I'm pretty sure wine during yoga would lead to a lot of time in child's pose; and I'd be ok with that :)
See now drunk yoga is totally something I could be down with. I say we start a new trend.
ReplyDeleteHehe, love this.
ReplyDeleteAt least you hung in there! I settled for walking my dog twice a day! Would be fun to try yoga with my son, tho! (Sans wine!)
ReplyDeleteJill: I think it would great entertainment!
ReplyDeleteJulia: Thanks :)
Lisa: True. Yes! I bet it would be fun!
I always use the block. I also often forget to wear a top with a tight neck, and end up flashing everyone. In the mirror, no less, which means that I'm actually flashing people twice. I honestly don't need to drink wine before yoga.
ReplyDeleteOh don't feel bad, I'm always feeling like I want to laugh in yoga. I feel like everyone else is finding their inner peace and becoming at one with the universe, while I'm just awkward and ruining the mood for everyone hahah.
ReplyDeleteStephanie: Do you use the black block? I'm finding that one is a bit sturdier. I really don't need wine for the yoga either :D
ReplyDeleteCamille: Can you come stand beside me in class?
Haha, I would totally do wine yoga. You should open a studio and bank on it ;) BTW, how have you been!?! Missed you too! AND, did you know you might be psychic?? I won't tell you which one, but you guessed the country we are going to next year. Weird! I'll be writing about it soon.
ReplyDeleteTexa: Hi! So glad to see you (read you?) again! Oooh, I love being psychic! Now I have to narrow down which country is the right one! You may be on to something with wine yoga; I mean, they have wine arts and crafts, right?
ReplyDeleteCheck out my blog, I left you an award.
